Guess Who?

Hint:  His nick name was "Dingle".

From the 1929 "South Fork School" yearbook
The first school house in Fifield was built in 1880 on a hill at the southern end of town, affording a beautiful view of the south fork of the Flambeau and the endless forest beyond.

In three years the town had out-grown the little white schoolhouse on the hill, so it was sold to be used as a drug store and a good-sized town-room building was constructed at the opposite end of town.

In 1889 this old north school was sold, and a new, five room building was erected on an attractive elevation west of town.  In this building, for many years, was developed the growing intellect of our rising generation.

In 1923 the school building was condemned by the state and after much discussion is was agreed on by an overwhelming majority of the citizens of the town that the old building be removed and a new, modern building, adequate for all need of both High and Graded school, be erected on the site of the old one.

The school was built in 1923.  It was a modern building in every respect giving the students the best available advantages.

The demolition of the Fifield School
She was only 82 years old, in very poor health and no one could care for her any more.  For the betterment of the community they had to put her away and now we’ll only have our memories of her.  We’ll all cherish those wonderful memories and tell our grandchildren that we were the chosen few that attended school in this special place called the Fifield School.  She was built well in 1923 and if not for neglect she could still be serving the community, but that was not to be.  Her dismantling is complete.

"It breaks my heart to look at the photos, but like a car wreck, you just can't look away.  The place had, I don't know, almost a magical quality for me.  So many firsts there.  So much innocence."
